The radar clears, the sun comes out, and the schedule wants an answer: can the crew go back to the lot? It’s one of the most common calls in asphalt work, and one of the easiest to get wrong — because the sky and the surface run on different clocks. Rain that ended two hours ago is still in the pavement, in the base, and in the low spots you can’t see from the truck.

The surface remembers what the sky forgot

Pavement doesn’t dry the moment rain stops. Water sits in surface texture, soaks into cracks and unsealed patches, and pools invisibly in wheel ruts and around drainage. How long it lingers depends on how much fell and how recently — a tenth of an inch in the last hour matters more than half an inch yesterday morning — and then on everything that controls drying: surface temperature, sun, wind, humidity, shade, and how well the lot drains.

That’s why the useful question isn’t “is it raining?” but “how much rain is the surface still carrying?” A backward look at the last few hours of rainfall tells you more about workability than the current sky does.

Sealcoat: the least forgiving surface in the trade

Sealcoat has two jobs that moisture ruins. It has to bond — and a film applied over a damp surface grips water instead of pavement, which is where peeling and tracking come from. Then it has to cure, which means releasing its own water into the air; a surface already feeding moisture upward stretches that cure and invites a washed-out or scuffed coat.

So sealcoating carries the longest post-rain wait on the schedule. Meaningful rain in the last three hours is a hold, period. Lighter accumulation spread over the last several hours puts the surface in a gray zone where the deciding vote goes to drying conditions — the dew-point spread and temperature that govern cure also govern how fast the pavement itself gives up its moisture.

Paving: damp is arguable, wet is not

Hot-mix is more tolerant, because 300°F of mat brings its own drying. But two things stay non-negotiable: no standing water in the mat’s path — trapped water flashes to steam and leaves a porous, poorly compacted mat — and no saturated base, which flexes under the roller and telegraphs into the finished surface for years. Heavy rain in the last few hours generally means the base hasn’t drained; after that, the call shifts to surface inspection and surface temperature, which controls both drying speed and your compaction window.

What decides it, in order

  • Recent accumulation — the last three hours weigh most; the last eight still count
  • Surface temperature and sun — a 90°F lot in full sun dries in a fraction of the time a 60°F shaded one does
  • Drainage — the lot that always puddles is always the last one ready
  • The operation — sealcoat waits longest, paving can move sooner, and neither goes on standing water
