The forecast diverges faster than the map suggests

Two sites twenty miles apart aren’t two samples of the same weather. The coastal one takes sustained wind and gusts the inland one never feels. The site at elevation runs five degrees cooler across every threshold that cares. The north-facing lot holds yesterday’s rain into this afternoon while the open subdivision baked dry by ten. Scattered convection — the classic “40% day” — will soak one address and miss another entirely, which is what that percentage was always trying to tell you.

Then the trades multiply the divergence: every site is its own pairing of weather and thresholds. The gusts that shut down the roofing site are background noise to the crew doing flatwork; the afternoon storm risk that kills exterior painting at one address doesn’t touch the punch-list day at another. “Is it a work day?” has no single answer because it was never one question.

Dispatch is an assignment problem

Read the day site by site and the character of the decision changes. It stops being go / no-go and becomes who goes where: the paving crew to the site whose window holds through compaction, the framing crew to the inland job while the coast is gusting, the interior day spent at the address whose window never opens. Marginal days are where this pays — a mixed Tuesday read regionally produces a half-idle operation, while the same Tuesday read per-site is usually a full schedule in a different order.

The failure modes of regional dispatch are familiar to anyone who’s run more than one crew: the morning burned at the wrong address, the crew sent home under a forecast that was true for the metro and false for their site, the forty-minute roll to a window that closed en route. The nowcast hours sharpen the same-day version — which cell hits which site in the next three hours is precisely the who-goes-where question.

Reading a mixed day

  • Every address gets its own window — per-site weather against the thresholds of the work planned there
  • Compare windows side by side — the day’s shape is the spread between sites, not the metro summary
  • Schedule to the spread — crews follow windows; the mixed day becomes a routing answer instead of a coin flip
  • Re-check the short horizon — scattered-storm days are decided again at midday, site by site
