We’ve written about the 24-hour rainfast window — the dry interval a liquid application needs before rain, and why the next day of forecast matters more than the current sky. But that’s half the story, because half the truck is granular. And for granular product, the same rain that ruins a spray is doing you a favor.

Two products, two clocks

Liquid applications work on the leaf. Foliar product needs residence time — its rainfast interval — before water hits it. Rain inside that window doesn’t dilute the application; it removes it, and hands it to the storm drain as runoff you’re responsible for.

Granular applications work in the soil. Prills sitting on the surface are inert until water dissolves them and carries the nutrients into the root zone. That’s why every granular label ends with some version of “water in after application.” A gentle rain arriving after a granular pass isn’t a threat — it’s the irrigation you didn’t have to run.

Same molecule of water. Opposite verdicts. The difference is which side of the application it lands on, and what the product needed at that moment.

Where the granular story goes wrong

Granular’s failure mode isn’t washing-off — it’s washing-away. An intense downpour can move granules and freshly dissolved product laterally: off slopes, off compacted ground, across driveways, into pavement gutters and storm drains — before any of it soaks downward. So the granular forecast question is about intensity and timing, not just occurrence: light-to-moderate rain in the next day is watering-in; a violent cell on a sloped property is relocation. The label’s own watering guidance is the reference — the forecast’s job is telling you which kind of rain is coming.

One forecast, read twice

Put the two clocks side by side and scheduling gets simpler, not harder:

  • Dry 24 hours ahead → liquid day. The rainfast window is open; granular would sit on the surface waiting.
  • Gentle rain arriving later today or tonight → granular day. The watering-in is free; a liquid app would be racing its interval.
  • Heavy convective rain coming → neither. One product runs off dissolved, the other runs off whole.
  • The split day — dry morning, rain by evening — is the interesting one: a liquid pass early can clear its interval before the rain that then waters in an afternoon granular pass on the next property. That’s the same forecast driving opposite decisions three hours apart, correctly.
