Every finisher has the story: slab down, bull-floated, sky looking fine — then a cell builds, and twenty minutes of rain takes the surface from broom-ready to pockmarked. The frustrating part is that the same rain three hours later would have been harmless. Rain on concrete isn’t one risk. It’s a countdown, and the clock starts the moment the truck discharges.

What rain does to a green slab

Fresh concrete is a suspension: cement paste at the surface is exactly what rain attacks. Water landing on an unset surface dilutes the paste and washes fines away, raising the water-cement ratio right where the slab takes its wear. That’s where scaling, dusting, and a soft, sandy finish come from — a slab that’s structurally fine underneath and looks like a failure on top. Rain during finishing also physically mars the surface, and working rainwater into the finish is worse than the rain itself: it trowels the elevated water-cement ratio deeper.

The countdown

  • Placement to initial set: maximum vulnerability. Any real rain means covers on, now, and finishing on hold.
  • Initial set through final set and finishing: still exposed — the surface can’t be worked and can’t yet shed water. This is the stretch where an incoming band of rain decides the whole day.
  • After final set (commonly 4–8 hours, mix- and temperature-dependent): light rain does little. Edges and saw-cut timing are the remaining concerns.
  • After ~24 hours: rain is water on curing concrete. That’s a feature.

Heat compresses this timeline; cold stretches it badly — a 50°F pour can stay vulnerable well into the evening, which is one more way cold-weather concrete compounds risk.

Reading the forecast like a finisher

The pour decision isn’t “will it rain today” — it’s “what falls between my placement time and final set?” That reframing changes real calls. Morning rain that ends by 8 a.m. doesn’t touch a noon pour. A dry morning with a line arriving at 2 p.m. kills a 10 a.m. pour that would finish into the teeth of it — same daily forecast, opposite answers. And a 40% chance spread across a whole day reads very differently from 40% concentrated in your finishing window.

The workable version of the rule: look forward from placement over the next several hours, sum what’s expected, and weigh it against where the slab will be when it lands. A trace with covers staged is a caution. A tenth of an inch or more arriving before final set is a stop — or a schedule change.

  • Move the pour, not just the decision — an hour earlier can clear a window a cancellation wastes
  • Covers on site before the truck — plastic staged beats plastic fetched
  • Watch the cell, not the percentage — once concrete is down, the only question is arrival time
  • Protect edges and joints first — they take rain damage hardest
